At American Wire Group (AWG), we specialize in supplying wire and cable solutions to clients in diverse industries. As part of our product line, we also offer high-quality power equipment, hardware and accessories to support the electrical infrastructure.
With reliability and performance at the forefront, we power equipment to meet our customer’s specific needs, budget and schedule.
Power Equipment: Types and Uses
XFMR Solutions:
- Power Transformers – up to 500 MVA, 500 kV. Power transformers efficiently step-up or step-down voltage levels to enable safe and efficient power transmission over long distances.
- Pad-Mounted Transformers – up to 10,000 MVA. Pad-mounted transformers are safer for public environments as they are enclosed and tamper resistant. Pad-mounted transformers are generally used in areas where aesthetics, safety, or underground distribution systems are priorities.
- Pole-Mounted Transformers – 5-500 kVA. Pole-mounted transformers are installed on utility poles and are typically used in areas where overhead power lines are the norm, such as in rural or suburban regions. These transformers are smaller and serve to step down the voltage from distribution lines to usable levels for homes and small businesses.
- Dry-Type Transformers – up to 50 MVA. Dry-type transformers rely on natural air circulation or forced air to cool the windings and core. This makes them safer for use in environments where flammable liquids could pose a risk, such as indoors, in commercial buildings, hospitals, or schools.
We also offer:
- Junction Boxes. Electrical wiring systems in homes and businesses use metal or plastic junction boxes to enclose and protect connected wiring. They’re available in various sizes depending on the number of wires contained within.
- Combiner Boxes. These boxes take the output of direct current (DC) from multiple solar panel strings and consolidate it into one output leading to a solar inverter.
- Switchgear and Panel Boards. While they’re applicable for different tasks and power levels, switchgear and panel boards are what electrical distribution systems rely on to control circuitry power flow.
- Circuit Breakers. Circuit breakers are safety devices used in electrical systems to protect circuits from damage caused by overloads, short circuits, or other electrical faults. They work by automatically interrupting the flow of electricity when a fault is detected, effectively “breaking” the circuit to prevent excessive current that could cause overheating, fires, or damage to connected equipment.
- Protection Devices. Protection devices are equipment and systems used in electrical substations to detect, prevent, and mitigate faults or abnormal conditions in the electrical grid.
